A recent national survey of nurse wellbeing indicated that Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2015) nurses were most likely (57.3%) to report that COVID-19 adversely impacted their overall wellbeing. The group was also the least likely (only 23.5%) to report effectively managing work related stress and anxiety. 

As a general population, Generation Z was found to have significantly higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, June 2020). When this demographic trend is coupled with new nurses who found themselves caring for acutely ill COVID patients, it makes sense that these nurses struggle more than their older counterparts.
 
Of concern to many nurse leaders like Larissa Africa, President of Versant, “We are seeing new graduate nurses indicating an intent to leave, not only their organization, but the profession”. She acknowledges that this is a trend that researchers have not seen before. (Nurse Leader, February 2021)
 
There is a consensus among nurse leaders that they must initiate the conversation of wellbeing with their Gen X nurses because they are unlikely to approach leadership with wellbeing issues. The Wellnurse Selfcare and Resiliency Training program is a great tool for nurse leaders to start the conversation, especially with the younger generation.

Advisory Board

We’ve assembled a great advisory board to help guide and inspire our efforts. With their input and support, we believe that The Wellnurse will help hundreds of thousands of nurses maintain joy in their careers.

Gillian Connolly

BSN, RN-BC serves as the Director of the Med Surg unit at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center

Gillian has been the Director since 2015. Prior to that, she worked on the Med Surg unit as a staff nurse. She has a passion for improving patient outcomes and delivering high quality care to the patients in our community. She is also very dedicated to the growth and development of new grad RNs and works diligently to ensure that they are supported and competent as they begin their nursing career journeys. Gillian spends her time outside of work backpacking, hiking, skiing and birding. She is an outdoor enthusiast and loves living and working in the beautiful state of Colorado.

 

Donielle Robertson

Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Riverside Community Hospital

Donielle Robertson is a 20 year experienced RN and hospital leader for the last 7 years.  During the 20 years Donielle has held several positions including cardiac nurse, traveler, emergency department nurse and manager , house supervisor and now director.   The experience in all of these areas has given Donielle great knowledge and skills as a nurse and leader.  Donielle’s current passion as a leader is to help others grow personally and professionally in order to ensure a healthy work/life balance.

 

Emily Toner

Master of Clinical Psychology, University of Melbourne

Emily consults with large corporations and schools on how they can embed simple wellbeing practices and concepts into their organizations. She is also one of the leading contributors on the mediation app, Insight Timer. She also creates course for The Mind Department to help people with simple strategies for improving their mental health and wellbeing.
